Bethany Hamilton

Almost a year ago I came across the movie Soul Surfer, the story of a girl called Bethany Hamilton that was passionate about surfing. However, at the age of thirteen, just after receiving a sponsorship from Rip Curl, one of the main surf equipment suppliers in the world, and signing up for a national surfing competition, Bethany lost an arm in a shark attack.but that didn’t stop her. Bethany continued competing with only one arm and won several competitions. With 80 Metacritic points from The New York Times the movie sounds like a great story.

But what would you say if the movie is based on a true story?

What would you say if Bethany Hamilton, born February 8th, 1990 truly lives in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii? I bet you would be impressed.

Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration to many disabled people all around the world. Her story is proof that determination, passion and faith can help anybody overcome any problem.

Born into a family of surfers Bethany learned to surf from the age of two and inherited the great passion of surf from them. However, at the age of 13, on the 31st of October 2003 Bethany was attacked by a shark and suffered a grave injury to her left arm, which had to be amputated to the shoulder. On November 26th she returned to surfing with only one arm and received great recognition from the media. To help her with her surfing technique, Bethany’s father made a special handle for her surfboards to help with her duck-diving.

Bethany also received multiple awards; from ESPN, MTV, and also surfing competitions. Her results are due to the fact that she never gave up on her passion and dedicated her entire life to surfing, no matter the conditions. She also released her biography, “Soul Surfer” which was a declared bestseller and later on a documentary based on her life, and the trauma she had to surpass, “Heart of a Soul Surfer”, which toured film festivals all over the world. What is more,  The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) awarded Bethany a special “Wahine O Ke Kai” Award, which in Hawaiian means “Woman of the Sea.” in March 2004.
